My name is Kelly McDonald, I live with my wonderful family in the Shenandoah Valley along with three Kooikers—Yorick, Hamlet and we have recently welcomed Ruby. My wife, Tammie, comes from The Netherlands and we found a special affection for the Kooikerhondje breed through her connection there. Thanks to the patience of my wife, I speak Dutch, and have had an opportunity to help with some of the translating work for the breed standard for KCUSA. We recently went back to The Netherlands as a family, and had an opportunity to visit an eendenkooi. It has been interesting learning about the history of the breed.
I’m often not sure what to say when people ask me what I do—I used to be a full time software engineer—but gave that up to become a full-time stay at home dad, a choice I have never regretted. We home-school our kids, and in addition to the homeschooling, getting kids and dogs to their various activities and cooking supper rather often, I am a creative type and have been working on a moonlight project that I hope will blossom into a business. In the course of this, I have been able to do projects involving programming, making circuit boards, and working in the shop with a variety of materials, all things that I enjoy. If that is not enough, I like to play around on the violin—and Yorick likes to sing along—sometimes a bit too much! Homeschooling has given my daughter, Elsje, time to do agility with Yorick (and Ruby when she is old enough). The agility equipment I have made and their training area is slowly taking over our back yard!
